What Is Vocal Cord Paralysis

The vocal cords or vocal folds are two bands of muscle inside the throat that open when we breathe and vibrate together when we speak. Vocal cord paralysis is a condition in which the nerve impulses that control the vocal cords are interrupted, leading to trouble breathing and speaking. While most sufferers will experience paralysis of only one vocal cord, rare cases of dual vocal cord paralysis do occur. Some cases of vocal cord paralysis will only involve minor irritation, while others may be life-threatening. If you think you may have vocal cord paralysis, it’s time to see an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist for care.

Vocal Cord Paralysis FAQs

The treatment for your condition will depend on both the cause and severity. While some may be able to heal with voice therapy alone, others may need bulk injections, and the most severe cases often require surgery. Bulk injections are a method for adding bulk to the paralyzed vocal cord to allow for improved function. Surgery may involve repositioning the vocal cord or replacing the damaged nerve, with severe cases of dual paralysis sometimes requiring a tracheotomy. A tracheotomy is a procedure in which an opening is made in the throat below the vocal cords to allow for airflow.

While it’s not always possible to determine the cause of the condition, vocal cord paralysis is commonly caused by:

  • Tumors
  • Infections
  • Surgery injuries
  • Neck or chest Injuries
  • Stroke
  • Neurological conditions

While some cases of vocal cord paralysis will be permanent, others are only temporary. The duration of your condition will likely depend on the cause as well as the steps you take to treat it.
