Nasal Obstruction FAQs

There are a few key causes of nasal obstruction, and the type that is affecting you will determine whether or not the condition will go away on its own. While nasal obstruction caused by allergies or a cold is likely to be temporary, the following conditions can cause chronic obstruction:

  • Nasal Polyps – growth in your nasal passage or sinus cavity
  • Deviated Septum – a malformation in the tissue between your nostrils
  • Enlarged Adenoids – enlarged tissue located above the tonsils
  • Choanal Atresia – excess production of nasal tissue
  • Nasal Tumors – cancerous growths in the nasal cavity

The duration of your nasal obstruction is primarily dependent on the cause of the issue. In other words, if your nasal obstruction was caused by a cold or allergies, your sinus is likely to heal on its own. However, if your nasal obstruction is caused by a more serious medical condition, then you may need surgery to get relief. To learn whether or not surgery is needed in your case, you can talk to an ENT at Glatz Group.

Nasal congestion is a common symptom of many conditions that will heal on their own, such as colds or allergies. However, it may be a sign of a permanent nasal obstruction. You should see an ENT for care if your nasal congestion has lasted longer than 10 days, or if you’re suffering from severe facial pain.
