What Is Vertigo?

If you’ve ever felt like the world was suddenly spinning, tilting, or rocking around you, even without a clear cause, you’ve probably experienced vertigo. Rather than being a specific condition, vertigo is a symptom and type of dizziness that is usually caused by an underlying condition, injury, or medication. The spinning feeling of vertigo is often accompanied by blurred vision, nausea, abnormal eye movements, difficulty walking, hearing loss, and sweating. If you’ve been experiencing episodes of vertigo, it’s time to see an ear, nose, and throat specialist (ENT) for treatment of your condition.

It’s important to note that vertigo can sometimes be a sign of an emergency condition. In the FAQ section below, you can learn when to go to the emergency room for vertigo.

Vertigo and Dizziness FAQs

If your vertigo is accompanied by any of the following symptoms, you should go to an emergency room or urgent care clinic for immediate attention:

  • Weakness in one arm or leg
  • Difficulty walking
  • A fever exceeding 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Chest pain
  • Heart palpitations
  • Sudden headache
  • Vision changes

If your vertigo is causing you any kind of distress or inconvenience, you should see an ENT for care. The general rule is to see a physician if you experience frequent or severe vertigo episodes.

The treatment for your vertigo will vary depending on the cause. There are four common tactics: surgery, vertigo medication, vertigo exercises, and repositioning. Surgery is incredibly rare in vertigo cases and is generally only needed for those with severe underlying health conditions. Medication may be a good option for sudden-onset vertigo. Vertigo exercises or vestibular rehabilitation therapy involves things like stretching and marching in place and will be customized to your needs. Repositioning is a method for resolving the ear issues that cause some types of vertigo by making specific head movements.

Yes, vertigo often will go away on its own, but that all comes down to the cause. If your vertigo episode lasts longer than several minutes, or if you experience frequent vertigo episodes, be sure to see a doctor for care.
